Cathy Strack offers Pilates enthusiasts, students, and teachers a place to deepen their practice of the Pilates method and gain a better understanding of its history.

Palates Workshops

Cathy is currently offering a four-part series of workshops,

In this new unscripted workshop, Cathy highlights Joseph Pilates early life in Germany, his immigration to New York City, the establishment of his iconic studio at 939 Eighth Avenue, and rare photographs not previously seen. There will be time for questions and answers after this 45-60 minute in person presentation.

This is a piece of Pilates history! Written in 1957 by Joseph Pilates and Frederick Rand Rogers, Return to Life Through Contrology outlines what the method is, and what it isn’t. The original booklet outlines who will benefit from Pilates and includes endorsements from some of his many clients: violinist, Yehudi Menuhin; dancer, Evelyn De La Tour; actor Jose Ferrer; and, dancer-teacher, Carola Strauss Trier. On the last page of the 1957 edition there is a photograph of the bronze bust of Joseph Pilates by sculptor John Terken.

Pilates For The Win

1. Cultivate a Calming Environment
  • Use Ambiance:

Set a relaxing tone with soft lighting and soothing background music to enhance the flow and focus of your practice.

  • Create a Ritual:

Incorporate a short stretching or movement routine to transition into a calmer state of mind.

2. Practice Mindful Breathing
  • Deep, Controlled Breathing:

Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth to release tension and calm your mind.

  • Synchronize Breath and Movement:

Coordinate your inhales with preparation and your exhales with executing movements to create a harmonious rhythm and stay present.

  • Focus on the Breath:

Allow your breath to be the anchor for your mind, helping you stay present and letting go of distracting or worrying thoughts.

3. Move with Intention and Fluidity
  • Focus on Quality, Not Speed:

Move slowly and with control, paying attention to the details of each movement and engaging your muscles.

  • Develop Mind-Body Connection:

Immerse yourself in the sensations of each exercise, becoming aware of how your body moves and how you hold tension.

  • Use Imagery:

Employ vivid cues, such as “lengthen your spine like taffy,” to deepen your neuromuscular engagement and promote a greater sense of ease.

4. Integrate Mindfulness
  • Be Present:

Let go of thoughts about the past or future and focus solely on the present moment and the sensations in your body.

  • Acceptance:

Be present with whatever you are feeling or experiencing without judgment, which is a key aspect of mindfulness.

5. Release Physical Tension
  • Scan Your Body:

Mentally scan your body from your toes to your head, noticing any areas of tension and consciously releasing them.

  • Gentle Stretching:
Focus on gentle stretches for your spine, hips, and shoulders to release areas where stress is often held.

Our Testimonials

The books written by Cathy are a great read for anyone interested in learning more about Romana and Joe. They are exhaustively researched and include many unknown facts about their lives and careers. Cathy presented a slide show and Q&A at my studio. She revealed many interesting stories about her experiences interviewing subjects who knew Joe and Romana. I highly recommend her books.

Lee A
